The lingual nerve is a sensory nerve that provides sensation to the tongue and the floor of the mouth. This nerve also carries taste buds. Some synonyms for lingual nerve include sublingual nerve, hypoglossal nerve, and glossopharyngeal nerve. The sublingual nerve is responsible for sensation in the floor of the mouth, while the hypoglossal nerve is responsible for movement of the tongue. The glossopharyngeal nerve is responsible for both sensation and taste at the back of the tongue. Injuries to the lingual nerve can result in numbness or loss of taste sensation in the tongue and can occur during dental procedures such as wisdom tooth extraction.
